Why organisations block Reddit
Reddit is a network of communities, each with its own rules and moderators. The same site holds technical help, news discussion and adult content, which is why policies vary so much.
Mature communities
Some communities contain adult or graphic content. Schools and youth services usually block Reddit outright, since network filters cannot reliably separate communities without inspecting traffic.
Time sink
Infinite feeds and comment threads make it easy to lose an hour. Contact centres and shift based teams often block it during working time.
Accidental disclosure
Staff sometimes post work problems with screenshots or details. Regulated firms limit posting from work devices to reduce that risk.
Age rules
Reddit requires users to be at least 13 in most countries. Primary and middle schools block it as a matter of course.
The other side: why many IT teams keep it open
- Engineers find fixes for obscure errors in Reddit threads.
- Product and marketing teams monitor feedback about their brand.
- Researchers and journalists track public discussion.
- Content quality varies widely between communities.
- Network level controls cannot filter single communities without TLS inspection.
- Personal phones on mobile data are always out of reach.
Verified Reddit domains
These domains are operated by Reddit for its website, apps, images, video and static files. Reddit can change hosts over time, so use the table as the minimum and let a category rule fill the gaps.
| Domain | What it serves | Used at ladder level |
|---|---|---|
reddit.com | All interfaces, including www, old and new, plus the app API and sign in | Levels 4 and 5 |
redd.it | Short links plus image (i.redd.it), video (v.redd.it) and preview hosts | Levels 2, 4 and 5 |
redditstatic.com | Stylesheets, scripts, icons and other static files | Levels 4 and 5 |
redditmedia.com | Embedded post frames on other websites and older thumbnail hosts | Levels 2, 4 and 5 |
Use subdomain matching. Entering only www.reddit.com leaves old.reddit.com and the API hosts open. Always block the registrable domain with all its subdomains. Check unfamiliar hostnames with our domain lookup tool.
The Reddit policy ladder
Start at the bottom and climb only as far as your policy needs. Each level lists what it does, what it needs and what it costs your users.
Levels can differ by group on the same network. Students might sit at level 5 while staff sit at level 2, and the guest network at level 1. Keep one written line per group so everyone knows which rule applies to whom.
Monitor only
Log Reddit lookups on your DNS filter and review them monthly. No user impact, and you learn who actually uses it and when.
Text only: block media hosts
Block redd.it and redditmedia.com and leave reddit.com open. Threads and comments load, most images and videos fail, which cuts bandwidth and removes much of the visual content.
Block on managed devices only
Block Reddit on company laptops, school Chromebooks and owned phones through device policy. Guest Wi-Fi and personal devices are left alone.
Full network block
Block all four domains on the DNS filter and firewall for in scope networks, with exceptions for named groups such as engineering or communications.
Full block plus front ends and proxies
Everything in level 4, plus blocks on third party front ends, mirrors and proxies, and device policies everywhere. This is the usual school setting.
Which level fits which organisation
| Organisation | Typical level | Reason | Common exception |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary and middle schools | Level 5 | Age rules and mature communities | None for students |
| High schools and colleges | Level 4 or 5 | Safeguarding, with some research value | Staff units |
| Software and IT companies | Level 1 or 2 | Engineers rely on threads for fixes | Not needed |
| Contact centres and retail | Level 4 | Focus during shifts on shared machines | Supervisors and social care teams |
| Banks, legal and healthcare | Level 3 or 4 | Disclosure risk on work devices | Communications and brand teams |
| Public libraries | Level 2 or 4 | Bandwidth and shared screens | Staff desks |
| Guest Wi-Fi | Level 1 or 2 | Visitors expect open access | Not needed |
What about blocking single subreddits? All communities share the reddit.com hostname, so DNS cannot tell them apart. Path based blocking needs a proxy or firewall with TLS inspection, which brings privacy, certificate and maintenance overhead. Most organisations decide between level 2 and level 4 instead.
How to apply each method
The ladder tells you which methods you need. These are the steps for each, described in a vendor neutral way.
Router
- Open the router's site blocking or parental control page.
- Add the Reddit domains, or a keyword rule for "reddit" and "redd.it".
- Apply to all devices or a schedule.
- Expect easy bypass with VPN or custom DNS.
DNS filter
- Enable the Forums / Message Boards category, or add the domains to a deny list with subdomains.
- For level 2, add only redd.it and redditmedia.com.
- Distribute the resolver via DHCP and log queries.
Firewall
- Deny the Reddit application or the forums URL category for in scope networks.
- Allow DNS only from your resolver, block port 853.
- Restrict QUIC on UDP 443 so traffic is inspectable.
- Add group based exceptions.
Intune
- Push a URL blocklist with the Reddit domains to Edge and Chrome through the settings catalog.
- Assign the profile to the device groups in scope and leave staff exceptions in a separate group.
- If your endpoint protection supports domain indicators, add the Reddit domains there with the block action so browsers beyond Edge are covered.
Google Admin
- Add the Reddit domains to Blocked URLs for the relevant organizational units.
- Block the Reddit Android app under Apps and extensions.
- Use staff units for exceptions, such as IT and communications.
Phone MDM
- Supervised Apple devices: hide or block the Reddit app, add the domains to the web content filter.
- Android Enterprise: leave Reddit unapproved in managed Google Play.
- Block VPN apps where required.
Exceptions without loopholes
Reddit exceptions are common, because so many technical and communications roles use it. Handled loosely, they turn a level 4 policy back into level 1 within a year.
Grant by group
- Use directory groups or organizational units, never individual IP addresses.
- Keep the same group name across DNS filter, firewall and endpoint policy.
Give it an owner
- Each exception has a named approver and a review date.
- Quarterly review removes leavers and role changes.
Prefer the lighter level
- Many teams only need text, so a level 2 exception is enough.
- That keeps bandwidth and visual content down even for allowed users.
Search engines show Reddit threads in results and sometimes in summaries. Users can read snippets there even when Reddit is blocked, which is normal and not a failure of the block. Clicking through is what the policy stops.
Roll it out and measure the result
A Reddit block is easier to defend when you can show what changed. Measure before, announce clearly, then check again.
- Week 0: run level 1 for one or two weeks and record daily Reddit lookups per network and device group.
- Agree the target level per group and write it into your acceptable use policy.
- Announce the change with the date, the reason, what users will see and how to ask for an exception.
- Week 1: switch on the network level controls, then device policies for laptops, Chromebooks and phones.
- Week 2: compare lookups and bandwidth with the baseline, and look for bypass attempts in the proxy category.
- Every quarter: review exceptions, retest, and adjust the level if the original reason has changed.
Reddit app vs browser
The official app, mobile browsers and desktop browsers each react differently to a block. This table shows what users see and which layer matters most.
| Surface | Behaviour when blocked | Watch for | Key control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop browser | Block page or connection error | Browser secure DNS skipping your resolver | DNS filter plus managed browser policy |
| Mobile browser | Same as desktop | Private Relay and VPN profiles | DNS filter plus firewall |
| Reddit app on Wi-Fi | Error banner, feed does not refresh | Cached posts that still show | DNS filter plus firewall app rule |
| Reddit app on cellular | Unaffected by network rules | Personal phones | MDM on owned devices |
| Reddit posts embedded on other sites | Empty frame or plain link | Embeds loading from redditmedia.com | Block all four domains |
VPN, proxy and front end bypass
Reddit has a particular bypass route that most sites lack: third party front ends that fetch Reddit content and serve it from their own domains. Plan for these alongside VPNs.
Independent sites mirror Reddit threads under new names, and many instances exist.
Control: block Forums plus VPN / Proxy categories, refreshed dailyConsumer VPN apps and free web proxies tunnel past network rules.
Control: VPN / Proxy category, firewall VPN detection, MDM app blocksBrowser secure DNS and Apple's Private Relay skip your resolver.
Control: browser policy, NXDOMAIN for use-application-dns.net, mask.icloud.com and mask-h2.icloud.comOur VPN and proxy category covers VPN services and web proxies. Front ends are usually classified as forums or proxies, so blocking both categories catches most of them without hunting names one by one.
How to test your Reddit policy
Keep a short record of each test with the date, the network and the device type. It makes audits simple and shows the next administrator exactly how the policy was verified. Test the level you chose, not just the domain list. For level 2, images should fail while text loads. For levels 4 and 5, nothing should load.
- Run nslookup for reddit.com, old.reddit.com and i.redd.it from a client on each network in scope.
- Open reddit.com and old.reddit.com in a private window after flushing the DNS cache.
- For level 2, open a thread with images and confirm text loads while images do not.
- Open the Reddit app on Wi-Fi, then on mobile data with a managed phone.
- Open a news article that embeds a Reddit post and confirm the embed is empty.
- Set a public DNS server manually on a test laptop and retry.
- Sign in as a member of an exception group and confirm Reddit works for them only.
- For level 5, try a known front end or proxy domain from your logs and confirm it is blocked.
Category based blocking for forums and communities
Reddit is the biggest forum site, but far from the only one. Category blocking covers forums, message boards, community sites and the front ends that mirror them, including domains registered yesterday.
Reddit is in our Forums / Message Boards category, with Community Sites and Social Networking as ranked secondary categories. Domains carry several ranked categories, so a policy can be strict about forums without touching help sites that happen to have a comments section.
New domains are checked again a week and a month after they first appear, because many sites only publish real content after launch. That is how newly launched front ends and mirrors end up in the right category soon after they go live, without anyone adding them by hand.
For vendors
Firewall, DNS filter, browser isolation and parental control makers license the database to power category blocking inside their products. See OEM licensing.
For MSPs and IT teams
Licensed exports include DNS RPZ, hosts files, plain domain lists for DNS filters and firewall external dynamic lists. Our blocklist formats guide explains each.
Reddit blocking FAQ
Which domains do I block to stop Reddit?
Block reddit.com, redd.it, redditstatic.com and redditmedia.com, each with all subdomains. reddit.com covers old and new interfaces; redd.it carries images, video and short links.
Can I block only some subreddits?
Not with DNS, because every subreddit lives on the same hostname. Blocking individual subreddits requires a proxy or firewall that inspects TLS and filters by URL path, which needs careful management and disclosure.
Why can people still read Reddit after I blocked reddit.com?
Common causes are third party front ends that relay Reddit content, cached copies in search engines, a VPN or a device using its own DNS. Block the Forums and VPN / Proxy categories to cover most of these.
Is it possible to allow Reddit text but block images and video?
Yes, roughly. Block redd.it and redditmedia.com and leave reddit.com open. Text and comments load, while most images and videos fail. It is a useful middle step on bandwidth constrained networks.
Which category is Reddit in?
Reddit is in Forums / Message Boards in our database, with Community Sites and Social Networking as ranked secondary categories.
Does blocking Reddit break Google search results?
No. Search keeps working and still lists Reddit threads. Clicking a Reddit result shows your block page or an error instead of the thread.
Can I block Reddit only during working hours?
Yes. Most DNS filters and firewalls support scheduled rules. Apply level 4 during core hours and drop to level 1 or 2 at lunch or after hours if your policy allows.
Does Reddit have a setting that hides adult content?
Reddit has account level settings for mature content, but users control them on their own accounts. They are not a substitute for a network or device policy in schools.
