Why apps need their own database

Websites have domains. Apps have bundle IDs. MDM tools, app stores and in-app ad requests name an app by its bundle ID or package name, so a domain list cannot tell your device policy that a new casino app is gambling. This database gives every app the categories your website policy already uses.

Same categories as websites

Apps carry the web filtering categories of our 120 million domain database. Block Gambling once, and the policy covers gambling sites and gambling apps.

IAB 3.0 for ads and analytics

Every app also has an IAB Content Taxonomy 3.0 category, the standard advertising platforms and analytics tools already understand.

Age rating and developer

The App Store age rating, the developer, the developer's website and its domain sit in each row, ready for parental controls and vendor reviews.

Android twins

When the same app exists on Google Play and we matched it, the Android package name is in the row, so one category serves both platforms.

What the rows look like

These rows come from the free sample. The sample has 1,000 apps with all 12 columns, in the same format as the full database.

Where teams use it

MDM and UEM tools

Let admins block or allow apps by category instead of typing bundle IDs one by one, and show the category next to every installed app.

Parental control apps

Age rating plus category gives sensible defaults for each age group, and a reason to show parents when an app is held back.

Web and DNS filters

Add app control next to web categories with one shared category list, and reach an app's own servers through its developer domain.

Ad tech

In-app ad requests carry the bundle ID. The IAB category turns it into contextual targeting and brand safety decisions.

Security and compliance

Audit the apps on company phones: social, messaging, file sharing, VPN and AI apps, grouped by category for the report.

Carriers and device makers

Categorize the app catalog behind family plans, kids' devices and app usage reports.

App control with our hosted web filter

A DNS filter sees server names, not apps, so it cannot block an app by its bundle ID. App control with our hosted filter therefore works in two layers that share one category list.

1. A block list for your MDM

Choose the app categories to block. We send the matching bundle IDs as import files for Jamf, Microsoft Intune, Mosyle and other MDM tools, and rebuild them every month.

2. The app's own domains in DNS

Apps talk to their developer's servers. The filter blocks those domains in the same categories, which also covers web versions of the same services.

App control is included in multi-site plans and costs $29 per month on the single-site plan. See hosted filter plans →

How the apps were categorized

Each app was read from its App Store listing: name, bundle ID, App Store genre and description.

Web filtering categories

A language model picks one or more categories from our web filtering list, the same list the domain database uses.

IAB 3.0 category

The model describes the app in IAB terms, the description is matched to the 10 closest of the 703 IAB 3.0 categories, and the model picks the best one.

Sensitive cross-check

Sensitive categories such as gambling, adult content, alcohol and weapons are cross-checked between the two taxonomies, so neither one misses them.

Categories are assigned by AI, not by hand. If an app looks wrong, tell us and it is corrected in the next update file.

Questions

How are the apps identified?

By App Store ID and iOS bundle ID, the identifiers MDM tools and app stores use. Where the same app on Google Play was matched, its Android package name is in the row too.

Which categories does the database use?

Two taxonomies: the web filtering categories of our domain database, so one policy can cover websites and apps, and the IAB Content Taxonomy 3.0 for advertising and analytics.

How accurate are the categories?

They are assigned by AI from the App Store listing, with sensitive categories cross-checked between the two taxonomies. Download the sample and judge the rows yourself. Corrections you send us go into the next update file.

What about apps that are not in the database?

The Mobile App Categorization API answers for any App Store app. Apps outside the database are categorized live with the same method, for 1 credit per lookup.

Are Android apps covered?

Android apps that also exist on iOS are matched to their App Store twin and get the same categories: 428,000 package names in the full database. Android-only apps are not covered yet; send us your list and we will quote it.

Can we use the database in our own product?

Yes, with the MDM and OEM licence. It includes the right to show the categories to your customers and a daily feed of new apps.
